| The benefits of Peter Reed cotton - EGYPTIAN GROWN COTTON - all cotton used in the manufacture of Peter Reed bedlinen is sourced directly from the Nile delta region in Egypt. The rich alluvial soil and the natural humidity of this area combine to produce a unique lustrous growth of cotton, which is considered to be amongst the world's best fibres. The soft feel of Egyptian cotton is ideally suited to the production of fabrics, which are in close contact with the body, such as bedlinen, underwear, and T-shirts.- LONG STAPLE COTTON - cotton growth in Egypt has a long staple length of over 2¼". The length of fibres ensures that very fine yarns can be spun from Egyptian cotton, which in turn can be woven into dense constructions of sheeting cloths. Peter Reed use exclusively long staple Egyptian cotton in their manufacturing processes.- CARDED & COMBED COTTON - Peter Reed use only carded, combed or super combed yarns in their weaving production processes. Prior to spinning, the cotton crop is carded or combed to remove a high percentage of the shorter fibres in the crop, which ensures that the yarns are spun from only the longest fibres present in the cotton harvest.- SINGLE YARN WOVEN CONSTRUCTION - Peter Reed sheeting cloths are all woven using single yarns. The fineness of these single fold yarns compared to multi-ply alternatives is used to weave very fine constructions of cloth. Two fold yarns are easier to weave than single yarns due to their additional strength, but cloths made from multi-ply yarns allow less intersections per area of cloth, and hence a lower true thread count.- HIGH WOVEN THREAD COUNT - the thread count of a cloth is the number of intersections of yarns in a given area (expressed in terms in one square inch or centimetre). Cloths with more than 180 threads per square inch are classified as 'Percales', and more than 250 per square inch 'Super Percales'. Fine thread counts are quoted after natural washing shrinkage has occurred. The highest cotton thread count achievable using single yarns is approximately 300 per square inch; cotton yarns which are thin enough to weave at higher counts than 300 do not have the strength to perform in the loom. Thread counts relating to cloths which contain multi-ply yarns can be misleading as they do not reflect a pure measure of intersections in the weave. Peter Reed sheeting constructions have been produced over many years and are established as industry and hotel standard qualities. The standard range includes thread counts of 180 (Quality 500 "EGYPTIAN"), 220 (Quality 1500 "PERCALE"), and 400 (Quality 2000 "SUPERCALE"). The Quality 2000 is a double yarn fabric.- WOVEN SELVEDGES - all bleached Peter Reed sheets are finished with a dedicated woven selvedge, where possible, rather than being sewn around all four hems. A woven selvedge is formed when the fabric is in the loom and provides a strong and clean edge to the cloth, which will outlast a sewn hem in laundering.- CHLORITE BLEACHING - all Peter Reed sheets are chlorite bleached in traditional kiers using soft water. This slow process produces a full white bleach, which will not yellow with age as can happen with textiles which are peroxide bleached.Click here to see the Peter Reed products |
